ENGLISH + CIVICS = CONVERSANT AND PRODUCTIVE U.S. CITIZENS

The CMP Adult Literacy Program (ALP) offers free English as a Second Language classes to immigrants and refugees from around the world. Our instructors are all specialists in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages) and are committed to helping their students achieve their goals of English proficiency.

As part of the Adult Literacy Program, we also offer a Civics/ESOL Education Program, which helps immigrants and refugees achieve the English competency they need to adjust to their new environment, progress towards their employment goals, and pass the naturalization exam for U.S. Citizenship. More than 300 people enroll in ALP every year.

My name is Wendy Sin. I came to the United States in 1983 and could not find a good job because of my poor English. To make a living, I worked long hours at a garment factory that did not require any English for more than 10 years. The job was hard and tedious. To change my life around and get involved in my two childrenĦĤs school activities, I realized that I must learn English. In January 1998, I was lucky enough to be accepted by the Adult Literacy Program to learn English as a Second Language. I studied hard, and participated actively in all the projects that the Program offered such as Oral History Project, Puppetry Show Project and Tutoring Project both in and after class, which helped me a great deal in improving my English.

In March 1999, I was referred by the ALP to CMP Computer Operation Training Program. There, I learned computer, office and job readiness skills. Upon completion, the counselor helped me find a job as a teller at the Dime Bank. Right now I am working at another bank with a much higher salary. Though the job is quite challenging, I love my job and enjoy it a lot. To advance towards my employment and educational goals, I must continue learning English. I want some day to go to college to get a B.A. degree.

Without learning English and without the skill training, I probably would have been among the hundreds of unemployed garment workers today. 13 years ago, I, a young immigrant woman with limited English proficiency would never dream of what I have achieved now. Adult Literacy Program at CMP was my first step, a major step, in my life to help me reach my goal and realize my American dream.
