SERVING REFUGEES AND ASYLEES: JOB TRAINING AND PLACEMENT

The Targeted Assistance Grant Program (TAG) is a job training program aimed specifically at refugees and political asylees. In addition to the job training, clients also receive vocational English language skills and job readiness instruction.

Participants gain extensive, hands-on training in PC operations and applications, including Microsoft Windows operating system, Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, and Access), and basic networking by using a state-of-the-art computer lab complete with high-speed DSL connections. For many of our clients, their immediate need is to earn a living with or without receiving any training. To assist these clients, CMP TAG provides direct job placement services. In the past three years, we have successfully placed more than 175 walk-in clients directly into employment situations.

Before coming to the United States in, we lived in the Ivory Coast as refugees. At that time,we all wanted to go to school but my father never had the money to send us to school.Sometimes, we never had food for about two to three days. If my sister did not send money, we didn't eat. It came to the time we go to school without food.

In 1997, my sister who lives in the United States knew that we were having lots of trouble with life. So she decided that she will send for us to come to the United States. In the year 1999, we came to the United States and arrived through Kennedy Airport.

When we got here, I had a little difficult time finding a job. All of the sudden, a friend of mine introduced me to this lady by the name of Lidiya Krayterman [of Chinatown Manpower Project, Inc]. She helped me and five of my brothers to find jobs and begin our lives in New York City.

With Lidiyas' help, I got a job as asecurity guard that paied $17 an hour and at the same time I started studying to become a mechanical technician in HVAC/R ( Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration). I got a degree and have been doing this job for many years now and am very successful. The dream that I hoped for while I was in Africa has really come true.
