CDC today introduced a new tool for classifying local COVID-19 risk, COVID-19 Community Levels. Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. Masking in public indoor settings is only advised in communities where COVID levels are high. In medium-level communities, high-risk people are advised to talk with their doctor about whether to wear a mask in public indoor settings. No masking is recommended in low-level community settings. Learn more and check your county’s level here: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/covid-by-county.html
UPDATES (02/24/2022)
CDC recently updated its guidance on vaccination that the interval between first and second doses of the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines may be as long as eight weeks for certain people, instead of the three or four weeks previously recommended. According to CDC, an 8-week interval may be optimal for some people ages 12 years and older, especially for males ages 12 to 39 years. A shorter interval (3 weeks for Pfizer-BioNTech; 4 weeks for Moderna) between the first and second doses remains the recommended interval for: people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised; adults ages 65 years and older; and others who need rapid protection due to increased concern about community transmission or risk of severe disease. DO choose masks that have two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric, completely cover your nose, mouth, and chin, and fit snugly against the sides of your face and don’t have gaps.
DO NOT choose masks that are made of fabric that makes it hard to breathe, for example, vinyl, or have exhalation valves or vents which allow virus particles to escape. Evaluation of face shields is ongoing, but effectiveness is unknown at this time. So they are not recommended at this time.
